Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Seawolves capture 3-2 victory at New Hampshire

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team extended its school record winning streak Thursday evening as it made it six straight victories with a 3-2 win at New Hampshire. The win keeps the Seawolves in first place in the America East standings as the squad moves to 9-7-2 on the year, 6-1-0 in conference play. The Wildcats now sit at 6-7-3, 3-3-1 in America East.

Faherty's Reaction
"It was a gutsy performance by our group tonight. UNH is a very well-organized team on the defensive side of the ball, and in the first half we struggled to break them down," said head coach Brendan Faherty after the game. "In the second half we picked up our movement off the ball and were rewarded with three very good goals."

"I'm not sure any of us know what happened in the last 15 minutes, but we will worry about that tomorrow. For now, we should all be excited about another three points and the opportunity to play for the regular season championship on Sunday."

Highlights
  • After a back-and-forth first half, Stony Brook put away the first goal of the game when sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) headed in a corner from senior Amy Thompson (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg) in the 64th minute.
  • On seemingly the same play, freshman Lea Kalmbach (Tettnang, Germany) made it a 2-0 game in Stony Brook's favor less than three minutes later when she headed in a corner from the same side, again from Thompson.
  • Junior Manuela Corcho (Norwalk, Conn.) made it a 3-0 Seawolves lead with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game as sophomore Kaitlin Loughren (Huntington, N.Y.) crossed it from the left side and Corcho one-touched it in to extend the lead.
  • New Hampshire responded less than two minutes later, and made it a one-goal game in the 83rd minute by knocking in a penalty kick after a Stony Brook Yellow Card.
  • Sophomore goalie Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied 10 saves in the game, marking the second time this season she has made double-digit saves in a game.

Notes
  • The victory over the Wildcats keeps the Seawolves in first place in America East and extends the Division I, school record winning streak to six games.
  • Stony Brook has now scored 14 goals in its last six games, allowing just four through the winning streak.
  • Five different players were able to earn a point in the game at New Hampshire.
  • Despite being outshot 19-6 in the game, Stony Brook was the more efficient team, only striking on target and connecting on three of the six attempts.
  • A win on Sunday would mark the first ever America East regular season title for the Stony Brook women's soccer team.
  • The Seawolves will not only look to capture their first conference title since 2012 on Sunday, but also extend their home winning streak to six games. Stony Brook has not allowed a goal at home since facing Delaware on Sept. 16.

Next Up
The Seawolves will compete for the regular season America East title as they host second-seeded Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. The game will conclude the regular season slate for both teams and serve as Senior Day for Stony Brook's seven seniors.
