Box Score New Rochelle, N.Y. - It was a tale of two halves for the Stony Brook women's basketball team (0-1) as it dropped its season opener to the Iona Gaels 57-46 on Friday night.

Turning Point

Stony Brook controlled the pace in the first half on its way to a 32-25 halftime lead. Senior Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) got into the paint at will to lead the Seawolves into the break with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The Seawolves came out of the break lacking the same energy in the second half, scoring just four points in the third quarter on 2-of-14 shooting (14.3%). The Gaels ended the stanza on an 11-0 run over the final 6:36 of the quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point lead. 

McCombs Reaction

"It was two totally different halves for our team," said head coach Caroline McCombs. "I thought we came out in the first half of attacking and getting them in foul trouble and it allowed us take the lead. In the second half we came out flat and started to turn the ball over. We wil get back to the drawing board and get ready for Monday night."

Inside the Numbers

• Stony Brook shot 46.4% (13-of-28) from the field in the first half, but was hampered by its sluggish third quarter, missing its final 11 shots of the period. For the game, they went 19-of-58 (32.8%). The Gaels shot 40.0% (22-of-55).
• The Seawolves went 4-of-24 (16.7%) from behind the arc, but hit two crucial ones in the fourth quarter, one by Bayne-Walker and another by junior Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.), to trim a 10-point deficit to four with three minutes to play.
• Iona held a big advantage at the free-throw line, making 11-of-18 (61.1%) attempts. The Seawolves got to the line just six time, knocking down four (66.6%).
• The Gaels beat the Seawolves on the backboards, 47-29
• The Seawolves forced Iona into 19 turnovers. Sophomore Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way with three steals.

Notes

• Senior Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.) had one of her best performances in a Seawolf uniform with a career-high 13 points and team-high seven rebounds.
• Bayne-Walker paced Stony Brook with 17 points, going 6-of-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
• Three players made their collegiate debuts and four made their Stony Brook debuts. Freshmen Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) and Kina Smith (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore Ayshia Baker (Lakewood, Fla.) and junior Lauren Wiliams (North Babylon, N.Y.) all saw their first game action for Stony Brook. Perez had two assists, Smith hauled in six rebounds and Williams scored five points.
