Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior guard
Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the game's final five points, including two free throws with 7.1 seconds to play, to lift the Stony Brook women's basketball team (1-3) to a 55-53 win over Columbia (2-2) on Tuesday night.
McCombs' Reaction
"I am very happy that we were able to get the win tonight," said head coach
Caroline McCombs. "Columbia is a very good team, and a very good road team. I thought they played a good game tonight. Luckily, we were able to make the plays we needed to make down the stretch to close this one out and get the win."
Turning Point
Trailing 53-50 with under a minute to play in regulation, McCombs turned to Bayne-Walker. The senior responded by stepping into a three-pointer after her defender went under a screen to tie the game at 53-53. The Seawolves then forced a Columbia miss on the other end and senior guard
Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) pulled down the rebound, leading to a timeout. On the ensuing possession, Bayne-Walker took a handoff, worked around a screen and drove baseline. She went up for a reverse layup and was hit over the top of the head. A 74.3% free throw shooter for her career, she stepped up to the line and calmly converted both attempts. After Stony Brook wound down the clock by using its remaining fouls to give, the Lions had a final attempt but Camille Zimmerman's tip at the buzzer couldn't go down and the Seawolves hung on for their first win of the season.
