Stony Brook, N.Y. – Junior
Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.) made one free throw with 3.2 seconds to go in double overtime to give the Stony Brook women's basketball team a 66-65 win over Cornell Friday afternoon at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 6-6, while the Big Red falls to 7-4.
Coach McCombs' Reaction
"I'm proud of us for weathering the storm … [Cornell] hit two tremendous shots on us to force the overtimes.
"Aaliyah did a really good job of setting that [final play] up to get that foul … We really wanted to just get her diving to the basket to get a layup there."
Turning Point
The Big Red hit game-tying three-pointers in the final seconds of both regulation and the first overtime, and led 65-62 in the final minute of the second overtime. After a three-pointer from Worley with 37 seconds to go was offline, senior
Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) collected the rebound in a scramble and kicked it out, as the ball worked its way around to sophomore
Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) for a game-tying three-pointer with 29 seconds to go.
Sophomore
Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed the rebound on the other end, and after a Seawolves timeout, Worley was fouled on the inbound to send her to the line for the game-winning free throw.
