Stony Brook edged by Baylor in series finale

Box Score Feb. 28, 2016

Box Score

WACO, Texas – After clawing their way back to tie the game in the seventh inning, the Stony Brook baseball team fell victim to a two-out, pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the eighth by Baylor for a 6-5 Bears victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballfield.

The Seawolves trailed 5-1 entering the seventh inning, but a double by sophomore 2B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.), a walk to junior SS Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.), a Baylor error that put freshman DH Joe Baran (West Hazelton, Pa.) on base and allowed Honeyman to score, an RBI single by junior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) and a two-out, two-run triple by senior LF Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) gave Stony Brook enough to tied the score.

Baran, in his first start of his career, collected a pair of singles, drove in a run and scored once. Senior 3B Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) also had a pair of hits and an RBI. Senior RHP Chad Lee (San Dimas, Calif.) relieved starter Connor Doyle (Maspeth, N.Y.) and tossed 3.2 innings and allowed just one run on two hits, but was tagged with the loss.

Turning Point
With the score tied 5-5 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Baylor senior West Tunnell pinch hit and launched a solo home run over the right field fence to break the tie.

Quoting head coach Matt Senk
"Today's pitcher's (Connor) Doyle and (Chad) Lee really competed for us. Despite a very disappointing weekend, we will learn from it and make sure this series helps us become a better team"
