Warney, Pikiell earn America East yearly honors

Feb. 29, 2016

Boston, Mass. - For a third straight year, senior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) was named America East's Kevin Roberson Player of the Year, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Warney joins Vermont's Taylor Coppenrath and Northeastern's Reggie Lewis as the only players to earn three Player of the Year honors in the conference's 37-year history.

For the second straight year, Warney averaged a double-double, totaling 18.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He scored at least 20 points in 13 regular season games, including a career-high 36 against Hartford.

Warney, Stony Brook's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and games played, became the 110th player in Division I history to reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds last week.

Since 1996-97, Warney is the only player to record career totals of 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 250 blocks, 200 assists and 100 steals.

Warney, Coppenrath and Lewis also garnered America East Rookie of the Year then earned three straight conference Player of the Year honors.

Warney also was named America East Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season. Warney, who's third in the country with 3.17 blocks per game, has blocked 92 shots, a season-high in 2015-16. He blocked a career-high nine shots against Princeton, and his last-second rejection of Jaleen Smith sealed a victory over New Hampshire.

Head Coach Steve Pikiell was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time, tying him with New Hampshire's Bill Herrion, who was a four-time winner at Drexel in the 90s.

Pikiell led the Seawolves to a program-record 23 regular season wins and an America East regular season championship for a fourth time in the last seven years.

Stony Brook won a school-record 18 straight games from December 17 to February 14.

For a second straight season, senior Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.) earned first team All-America East honors.

Despite not being named to the preseason all-conference team, Puriefoy averaged a career-high 14.5 points, including 14.8 ppg during conference play. More than half of his makes came from behind the arc as he recorded a career-high 71 threes. He's shooting 40 percent from behind the arc this season.

Puriefoy has earned three all-conference honors, including two spots on the first team.

Senior Rayshaun McGrew (Chicago, Ill.) earned an all-conference honor for a second straight year, making second team this season.

McGrew, who earned third-team honors as a junior, averaged a career-high 11.3 points per game. He scored a career-best 20 points against UMBC on January 13.

He ranks in the top 10 in Division I program history in rebounds despite playing only three seasons.

Along with Warney, McGrew and junior Ahmad Walker (Port Washington, N.Y.) garnered all-defensive team honors. McGrew is third on the team with 6.2 rebounds per game. Walker is second on the team in rebounding (7.0) and total steals (30).
