STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Another all around team effort lifted the Stony Brook baseball team to an 11-2 victory over visiting Iona on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
It was also a day of first for the Seawolves (6-8) as sophomore RHP Connor Doyle (Maspeth, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate victory and sophomore DH Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) connected for his first career home run. Doyle picked up the victory after he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits with five strikeouts. Gazzola homered over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning with a runner on base.
A total of six pitchers were used in the Seawolves win and combined to allow six hits and register 11 strikeouts.
At the plate, four Stony Brook hitters collected multi-hit games, while senior 1B Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) added four RBI to his two-hit performance.
Turning Point
It didn’t take long for the Seawolves to jump on the Gaels and set the tone for the game. Leadoff batter junior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) tripled to left centerfield in the bottom of the first and scored on Andruw Gazzola’s first career home run that landed over the right field fence. All told, Stony Brook scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the first.
