STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Behind a solid day by the Seawolves' pitcher, the Stony Brook baseball split a America East Conference doubleheader with visiting UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves (16-14, 6-3 AE) dropped the opener, 2-1, to the River Hawks (15-15, 4-7 AE) despite the just six hits allowed and eight strikes outs by the Stony Brook pitchers.
Stony Brook took game two 5-0 begin a combined one-hitter from the arms of freshman RHP Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) and sophomore LHP Teddy Rodliff (Quincy, Mass.).
Junior C David Real (Chandler, Ariz.) led the offensive attack on the afternoon with a pair of hits in each game, while junior SS Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.) collected three RBI with a single and a double in game two.
Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"We did a really good job of pitching today and it is tough to come away with the split when you pitch as well as you did all day. The second game we threw a combined one hitter. In the first game we got a solid start and had some opportunities to score and we were not able to bring them home. That is tough to lose that game, but it was good to get the split and be in a position to win the series on Sunday."
Game One Turning Point
With the gamed tied 1-1 in the top of the eighth inning, UMass Lowell was able to capitalize on a leadoff single and a double to bring what would be the decisive run across the plate.
Game Two Turning Point
Junior RF Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) walked and later came around to score on an infield single by Giles. That run would prove to be all the Seawolves needed for the win.
Notes
- Senior 2B Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded career stolen bases number 40 and 41 during Satruday's game and sits in seventh-place on Stony Brook's career list.
- Parenty also had two hits on Saturday to bring his career total to 232, just one behind former teammate Cole Peragine for fifth-place.
- Junior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) singled in each of the two games on Saturday and has now reached base safely in 14 straight games.
- Sophomore LHP Teddy Rodliff (Quincy, Mass.) picked up career save number eight with his fourth of the season in game two on Saturday. He moved into a tie for fifth-place on Stony Brook's career list.
