Seawolves erase five-run deficit to clip Hofstra, 8-7

Box Score April 19, 2016

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (21-17-2) erased a 7-2 fifth inning deficit to edge Hofstra (21-18) 8-7 at University Field on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Melissa Phelan (Saddle Brook, N.J.), who missed the end of March and most of April with an injury, delivered the go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth inning to help run the Seawolves' unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Bryant's Reaction

"It was a well-played game today by both teams," said head coach Megan Bryant. "It was good to be able to challenge ourselves against a good team. Our pitchers battled and were aided by our strong defense. We swung the bats well and I was happy with the way we fought back after falling behind."

Turning Point

The game took on a completely different look in the fifth inning when the teams combined for 10 runs. Stony Brook entered the frame with a 2-1 lead, but the Pride plated six, four from a grand slam by Kim Smith, to lead 7-2. Stony Brook wasted little time in its answer, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif.) got the ball rolling with a leadoff walk, then moved to second on a double by senior Allie Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.). Senior Kellie Reynolds (Paso Robles, Calif.) singled home a run to make the score 7-3, then scored on a two-run single by Phelan. Junior Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.) added an rbi sac fly.

Stony Brook added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Patty Borges (Berkley, Mass.) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a sac bunt and ground out.  Reynolds then delivered the tying hit with a chopper up the middle. Senior Diane Caruso (Middletown, N.Y)  followed with a walk, setting the table for Phelan's line drive single to center.

Notes

  • Senior Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) started the game, was relieved by sophomore Maddy Neales (Orange, Calif.) then returned to pitch the seventh inning and record her third save of the season.
  • Neales earned the win to move to 7-5.
  • Sallen's hitless streak reached 15.1 innings before Hofstra's Brielle Pietrafesa ended it with a one-out double in the second.
  • Caruso hit a two-run blast in the first inning, her team-leading seventh of the year, finishing the game 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two rbi.
  • Reynolds, Phelan and Borges also netted multi-hit games.
  • Phelan's three rbi were a team-high. She has six rbi in her last two games.
