STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Solid pitching and clutch hitting helped guide the Stony Brook baseball team to an 8-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting Manhattan at Joe Nathan Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Seawolves (12-12, 3-1 AE) once again used five pitchers and settled in after the Jaspers (7-17, 1-2 MAAC) posted two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. Stony Brook allowed just four hits the rest of the way. Junior RHP Connor Doyle (Maspeth, N.Y.) picked up the win with three strong innings. He pitched the fifth, sixth and sevenths innings and allowed just one hit.
Senior 2B Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) and senior 1B Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) led the offensive attack with three hits each. Parenty got Stony Brook on the board with a two-run double in the sixth inning, while Caputo slugged his third homerun of the season – a two-run shot – in the eighth inning. Sophomore 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) added a two-run triple to the offensive output in the sixth inning.
Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"After they (Manhattan) jumped out to a 2 run lead out pitchers really did a great job of shutting it down the rest of the game. That gave us an opportunity to finally get to them with some clutch hits. Jack (Parenty) had a good day with a clutch hit. Bobby (Honeyman) had another clutch hit and Johnny (Caputo) came up big to widen the lead at the end.”
Turning Point
Manhattan posted a pair of runs with one out in the top of the first inning, but starter sophomore RHP Nicholas DiEva (Cherry Hills, N.J.) induced a 4-6-3 double play to get the Seawolves out of the inning. The Jaspers didn’t threaten to score the rest of the game.
