STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Despite another late inning rally, the Stony Brook baseball team fell to visiting UMBC 6-3 in 11 innings in the America East Conference series finale at Joe Nathan Field.
The Seawolves (19-20, 9-4 AE) trailed the Retrievers (20-20, 8-9 AE) 3-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning when junior RF Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and senior 1B Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) each singled, junior David Real (Chandler, Ariz.) doubled down the RF line to score Baker and Caputo and sophomore 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) doubled down the LF line that scored Real all with one out in the inning.
UMBC went on to score three runs in the 11th inning to claim the victory, but thanks to Saturday’s sweep of the doubleheader, Stony Brook did win the weekend series.
Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
“It is always a good weekend when you can win a series and obviously when you sweep it can make it a great weekend. We were in position to have a great weekend and are pleased with the two-out-of-three, but we are fighting like heck to get into that first or second place in the conference to get a bye. We would have put ourselves in great position with the sweep, but we remain in good position with nine (games) to play.”
Turning Point
After a leadoff single in the top of the 11th inning, UMBC hit back-to-back triples on their way to a three-run inning and take the lead for good over the Seawolves.
