Seawolves preview: Special Teams

Aug. 19, 2016

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook football special teams unit, led by Tony Thompson, returns many key components for the 2016 season, including senior place kick Przemyslaw Popek (Yonkers, N.Y.) and sophomore punter Marc Nolan (Woodstock, Ga.).

Thompson enters his 11th season on the Seawolves' staff and his fourth in charge of the special teams.

In addition to the kickers, Thompson returns sophomore kickoff specialist Alex Lucansky (Orange Park, Fla.) and senior deep snapper Kevin Fennell (Randolph, N.J.).

In his career Popek has connected on 11 of 18 field goal attempts and made 40 of 43 extra point attempts. Nolan recorded 63 punts in 2015 for an 33.6 averaging, including 18 kicks placed inside the 20.

On the return side, Thompson and the Seawolves have juniors Donavin Washington (Glendora, Calif.), Ray Bolden (Euless, Texas), Marvin Hart (Minneola, Fla.) and Darin Peart (Brooklyn, N.Y.) back from last season and add junior transfer Sherman Alston Jr. (Clifton, N.J.) to the mix of players back to field punts and kick offs.

Thompson's group and the rest of the Seawolves host North Dakota to open the season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
