Edwards' goal helps Stony Brook to 1-1 draw

Aug. 21, 2016

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) netted the Stony Brook women's soccer team's (0-1-1) first goal of the season late in the second half to send the game to overtime in a 1-1 draw with Sacred Heart (1-0-1) on Sunday evening at LaValle Stadium.

Faherty's Reaction

"We didn't start very well, but we rebounded and were undortunate to not get a win," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "Sacred Heart is a tough team to play against so I am happy with the way we responded. Overall, I think we did well and took a step forward today."

Highlights

  • Sacred Heart's Danielle Karpiej and Melanie DaSilva worked a nice combination on the top of the Stony Brook box resulting in DaSilva's first goal of the season in the 14th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
  • After a pretty tame first half offensively from both sides, Stony Brook increased the pressure in the second half. Its best chance came when senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.) won an aerial challenge off a corner kick, but her header was cleared off the line by a Sacred Heart defender.
  • The Seawolves had another terrific scoring chance moments later when Cahill fed junior Sam Goodwin (Westbury, N.Y.) with a short corner. Goodwin took two dribbles inside and let fly off the crossbar.
  • Edwards broke a 183 minute scoreless drought to open the season when she received a pass from Cahill in stride and slotted home to the near post.
  • Stony Brook nearly received a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation when Edwards collided with the Sacred Heart goalkeeper in the penalty area, but the referree deemed the contact legal.
Notes
  • For the second straight game the Seawolves dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Pioneers 20-7. They have outshot their opponents 44-17 on the season.
  • Goodwin led the Seawolves with four shots, while sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) paced the team with two shots on target.
  • Junior Shannon Robinson (Stony Point, N.Y.) stopped a career-best four shots for the Seawolves.
  • Stony Brook owned the action in the second half holding a 12-2 shot advantage.
  • Edwards' first goal of the season was the 19th of her career, moving her into solo eighth place in the school's record books.
  • Cahill notched her first career assist.
  • Stony Brook held a decisive 12-1 edge in corner kicks, generating numerous good looks off of its attempts.
