Seawolves split opening day of 2016 season

Stony Brook downs Stetson, falls to UCF

Orlando, Fla. - The Stony Brook volleyball team opened the season with two matches at the Holiday Inn Orlando East/UCF Invitational, as the Seawolves defeated Stetson after falling to UCF.

UCF 3, Stony Brook 0
The Seawolves fell in three sets to host UCF (17-25, 19-25, 19-25) in both teams' season opener Friday afternoon at The Venue at UCF.

By the Numbers
- Sophomore McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with 10 kills.
- Junior Melann Amory (Center Valley, Pa.) had a team-high 13 digs while serving as the libero.
- Sophomore Morgan Kath (Muskego, Wis.) tallied 30 assists and five digs.
- The Seawolves were outhit .370-.231 in the match.

Notes
- The Seawolves are now 2-2 in season openers under Coach Pawlikowski.
- All five freshmen made their season debuts in the match.



Stony Brook 3, Stetson 0
The Seawolves picked up their first victory of 2016 with a sweep of Stetson (25-15, 25-12, 25-16) Friday evening at The Venue at UCF. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 1-1, while the Hatters fall to 0-2.

By the Numbers
- The Seawolves hit .402 on the night, led by a 10-kill performance from sophomore Taylor Wilson (Corydon, Ind.).
- Freshman Jordan Gels (Lewis Center, Ohio) tallied 13 digs, seven kills, and three aces in the victory.
- Stony Brook held Stetson to a .110 hitting percentage for the night.
- Freshman Liz Pulver (Temecula, Calif.) recorded nine kills, while sophomore McKyla Brooks (Blasdell, N.Y.) added eight.
- The Seawolves recorded six aces in the match, led by the three from Gels.

Notes
- Redshirt-sophomores Emily Costello (Webster, N.Y.) and Abby Hickey (Dekalb, Ill.) returned to the floor Friday evening for the Seawolves after missing the 2015 season due to injury.
- The Seawolves' .402 team hitting percentage was the best since Stony Brook hit .409 against UMass Lowell on Oct. 30, 2015.
