Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Seawolves down Iona 3-2 for third straight win

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Three different players netted goals and two more recorded multiple assists as the Stony Brook men's soccer team (4-2) beat Iona (1-5) 3-2 for its third straight win.

Anatol's Reaction

"It's great to get a win at home," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "We challenged the team to be better at home since we only have five home games. I thought tonight the team was good tonight. We scored three good goals and were organized in the back."

Highlights
  • Junior goalkeeper Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) made two big saves in the first half to send the Seawolves into halftime tied 0-0. His first save was a diving effort to his right to stone a curling shot from Samuel Saenz in the 9th minute.
  • McMahon's second big save came in the 36th minute, stopping a shot from Killian Colombia in a one-on one attempt.
  • The Seawolves gained traction in the second half and freshman Stephen Turnbull (Holtsville, N.Y.) turned the momentum into a goal for his first of his career. He was left free at the back post on a corner kick and directed it towards goal and off a defender.
  • Stony Brook's second goal was its nicest display of soccer on the night. Sophomore Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) collected his second assist of the night, feeding freshman Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) down the right. Dass's cross found junior Thibault Duval (Liege, Belgium) at the backpost and the midfielder deposited his second goal of the season with a diving header.
  • Iona cut the lead to 2-1 with a 73rd minute goal, snapping a 260 minute streak without conceding a goal for the Seawolves.
  • The goal didn't shake Stony Brook as it responded with a goal of its own 29 seconds later. The addage "the third time is the charm" rang true for senior Eduardo Valle (Miami, Fla.) as he scored after having his initial two shots stopped. Dass notched an assist to join Gamwanya with two on the night.
  •  Iona could only muster an 81st minute penalty kick goal by Oscar Gonzalez the rest of the way.
Notes
  • Stony Brook's three-game win streak is just its second since 2012. The other came last season with back-to-back-to-back wins over Hartford, Hofstra and Binghamton.
  • Stony Brook's 260 minute streak without giving up a goal is its longest since a 268 minute spell last season.
  • The Seawolves are 4-0 when scoring the game's first goal.
  • Stony Brook finished with a 14-11 lead in shots, while shots on goal were even at seven.
  • The Seawolves held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • Valle led with four shots, while Duval and Gamwanya followed with three.
  • McMahon finished with five stops.
