Seawolves battle NJIT to 2-2 tie

Union, N.J. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team (4-2-1) used two second-half goals to erase a halftime deficit before conceding late in regulation to draw to settle for a 2-2 draw at NJIT (3-2-2).

Anatol's Reaction

"It was an entertaining game. I thought both teams played well and had opportunities to win the match," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "We did a good job of battling back to take the lead after falling behind in the first half. However, we need to do a better job of closing games out with the lead in the final 10 minutes. We will take the result and get ready for Wednesday's match at Marist."

Highlights

  • The Highlanders grabbed the lead in the 29th minute when Rene White headed in a corner kick in the 29th minute.
  • Stony Brook responded with a goal from Eduardo Valle (Miami, Fla.) in the 59th minute. He received a pass from junior Barnabas Mako (Budapest, Hungary) and finished into the upper right corner to knot the score at 1-1. It was Valle's third goal of the season and Mako's first career point.
  • Junior Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) gave the Seawolves the lead in the 66th minute, converting a penalty kick for his second goal of the season.
  • NJIT tied the match at 2-2 in the 81st minute when Victor Kausch headed home a free kick at the back post.
  • Junior Thibault Duval (Liege, Belgium) almost answered immediately but his shot went off the post less than one minute later.
  • Andrew Nino had the best opportunity in the overtime period, but like Duval, he also found woodwork.
  • The Seawolves had the final opportunity of the match and sophomore Serge Gamwanya nearly made it count, but his fabulous free kick was kept out by a diving save.

Notes

  • The Seawolves finished with a slight 15-14 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks also tilted in Stony Brook's favor by a count of 8-5.
  • Freshman Gianfranco Barone (Howard Beach, N..Y.) made his first career start in goal, finishing the match with four saves.
  • Valle and junior Barnabas Mako (Budapest, Hungary) led Stony Brook with three shots each.
  • The Seawolves run their unbeaten streak to four games, matching their highest total from last season.
