Box Score
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Junior
Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) netted two goals, both of which were assisted by sophomore
Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway), as the Stony Brook men's soccer team (5-2-1) raced past Marist (4-2-1) 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Anatol's Reaction
"It was a very good performance on the road against a good opponent," said head coach
Ryan Anatol. "We dictated the game today, defended well and created very good chances. We fully deserved the result."
Highlights
- Erdei gave the Seawolves a much needed jolt with his goal 44 seconds before halftime. He raced towards goal with a defender beside him, slowed to allow the defender to gain position, then used him as a screen with a shot to the far post.
- Marist's best chance came early in the second half. After a srum in the box, the ball fell to a forward. His shot looked destined for goal but was blocked out by senior Lars Togstad (Trondheim, Norway) for a goal kick.
- Sophomore Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) nearly gave Stony Brook a 2-0 advantage when he fizzed a shot from 30 yards out just wide of the post.
- Gamwanya set up Stony Brook's second goal in the 77th minute for his second assist of the night, dribbling down the left flank then crossing to an unmarked Erdei. The forward made no mistake with a calm finish that left the Marist goalkeeper helpless.
Notes
- Marist finished with a 16-12 shot advantage yet shots on goal were 3-3.
- Erdei finished with five shots and three shots on goal.
- Erdei's multi-goal performance was the second of his career. The other came in a 3-0 win at No. 17 Hofstra last season. He now leads the team with four goals and has 12 for his career.
- Stony Brook's five-game unbeaten streak is its longest since a six-game stretch in 2012.
- Gamwanya enjoyed his second multi-assist game of the season, upping his career assist total to nine. His four helpers lead the team and rank third in the conference.
- Junior Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) made three saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career.
- Stony Brook is 4-1-1 in road matches this season, its highest win total away from home since it went 5-3-1 in 2012.
