Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Amy Thompson (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg) scored her first career goal 1:53 into the second overtime to lift the Stony Brook women's soccer team (2-5-2) over Delaware (1-8) 2-1 on Friday night. Junior Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) sent the match into overtime with the equalizing goal with 50 seconds to play in regulation.
Faherty's Reaction
"Even if we would have lost, I thought we played a really good game," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "Our attack was much better and much more fluid. It was great for our team to get the late goal and then keep pushing and pull it out in overtime."
Highlights
- Stony Brook celebrated as if they had taken the lead in the 21st minute when senior Priscilla Wiggins' (Fresno, Calif.) free kick went untouched into the net. Unfortunately the goal was called back because the referee had deemed it an indirect kick after whistling for the foul.
- Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute. Natalie Zelenky redirected a free kick on target that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.). The rebound came right back to Zelenky who finished to the far post.
- Stony Brook amped up the pressure in the final five minutes. Cahill had an opportunity to tie in the 87th minute after she freed herself with a fantastic move but sailed her shot high.
- Redemption was sweet for Cahill as she tied the game in the final minute. Sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) sprung her with a quick throw-in. Her initial shot was blocked but she was able to stick with it and slot it under the keeper.
- The Seawolves nearly won it 32 second later but Wiggins pulled a left-footed shot just wide of the far post.
- Stony Brook carried the momentum into the overtime. Johnstonbaugh had the first good chance after a great pass from Thompson but she was denied from in tight.
- Senior Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) had two chances later in the period, but both were stopped.
- Cahill started the winning play when she found space in the midfield and laced a ball to Johnstonbaugh. The winger raced down the flank and cut the ball back to Thompson who ran unimpeded down the middle and finished for the victory.
