STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook Athletics will retire the No. 20 jersey of
Jameel Warney, a three-time America East Player of the Year and the most decorated player in Seawolves basketball history. Warney will be honored in a halftime ceremony at Island Federal Credit Union Arena during the home game against Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
Warney finished his Stony Brook career as the all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and games played. He was the second-fastest player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark, tallying 2,132 through his four-year career. The Plainfield, New Jersey, native is the only Stony Brook player to score 40-plus points in a game after putting up 43 in the America East championship game against Vermont last season. He is one of 108 players in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.
"Jameel gave so much to Stony Brook during his four years on campus and is incredibly deserving of this honor," Stony Brook Director of Athletics
Shawn Heilbron said. "His legacy at Stony Brook is unmatched, and I am excited for his number 20 to take its rightful place in the rafters along with the America East and NCAA Tournament banners that he helped our team achieve last season."
An honorable mention AP All-American a season ago, Warney played in the NBA Summer League and participated in training camp with the Dallas Mavericks this past fall. He is currently playing for the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League and is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds per game for the Legends, notching a double-double on three occasions in his debut season.
Warney's No. 20 will join longtime major league pitcher and Stony Brook Hall of Famer Joe Nathan's No. 22 as the only retired numbers in the school's history.
