STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football coach
Chuck Priore announced the promotion of linebackers coach
Bobby McIntyre to the position of defensive coordinator.
McIntyre will replace Lyle Hemphill, who recently joined the staff at Wake Forest, to lead Stony Brook's nationally-ranked defensive unit. McIntyre will still coach the linebacking corps in addition to his new role.
"I am excited about Bob being in charge of our defense," Priore said. "He has been an integral part of our success over the past six years. Bob is a great teacher and motivator. He has great experience in our defensive scheme and will allow us to continue to run our package."
McIntyre recently completed his sixth season on the Seawolves' staff with Priore. He came to Stony Brook in 2011 as the inside linebackers coach after spending a season at Bryant University. McIntyre coached the inside linebacker position at Stony Brook for two seasons before taking over the entire linebacking corps in 2013.
Stony Brook has consistently ranked among the best defensive units in the FCS during the past several years, including in 2015 when the Seawolves finished in the top 10 in eight defensive statistical categories, including ranking first in total defense.
This past season Stony Brook ranked third in the nation in total defense and was led by two of McIntyre's linebackers. Sophomores
Shayne Lawless, a second team All-CAA Football selection, and
Noah McGinty finished second and third respectively on the team in tackles. Lawless made 78 stops, while McGinty had 76 tackles.
McIntyre, also spent time on the sidelines at Hofstra from 1989-2005 where he guided eight players that went on to sign NFL contracts.
A 1976 graduate of Salem College in West Virginia, McIntyre earned a master's degree in Health Education from Hofstra, graduating with distinction.
