Stony Brook drops final game of 2017 regular season at Vermont

STONY BROOK, N.Y –  Stony Brook women's soccer dropped its 2017 regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at Virtue Field, falling to Vermont by the final score of 2-0. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 8-10-0 (4-4-0 AEC) in 2017.
 
Stony Brook will enter the 2017 America East Championship as the No. 5 seed, traveling to the No. 4 seed of the tournament in the first round of the postseason tournament on Thursday, Oct. 26.
 
Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"A disappointing loss for our group today, but credit to Vermont for being better prepared to play from the first whistle. We have to put this game behind us quickly, as we have our biggest match of the year on Thursday."

  • Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) recorded a team-best four shots. The Seawolves outshot Vermont 21-10, tallying eight shots on goal.
  • Vermont scored the game's first goal just over three minutes into the game, as Sarah Martin fired a shot that deflected off a Seawolves' defender and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Catamounts.
  • Christina Barry scored Vermont's second goal in the 31st minute, finishing off a corner kick to stretch UVM's lead to two goals.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) stopped four shots. She now has 62 saves in 2017 to go along with a 0.93 goals-against average.
Next Up
Stony Brook now heads to the postseason, entering the America East Championship as the No. 5 seed. The Seawolves will travel to the No. 4 seed in the first round of the postseason tournament on Thursday, Oct. 26.
