Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Seawolves clinch postseason berth, topping UMBC in regular-season finale

BALTIMORE, M.D. – Stony Brook men's soccer ended the 2017 regular season in impressive fashion on Wednesday night at Retriever Soccer Park, topping UMBC, 1-0, to earn a postseason playoff berth. With the win, the Seawolves (7-5-5, 1-3-3) will be the No. 6 seed in the 2017 America East Men's Soccer Championship.

Lars Togstad (Trondheim, Norway) and Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad) both scored in the win for Stony Brook, while goalkeeper Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) earned his 14th career shutout in the victory.

Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"Strong performance tonight in many areas. They [UMBC] were good on restarts and we had to defend very well to get the shutout. Lars [Togstad] scored a great header and I am happy for him as he has been so close throughout the year. I thought we also played with good energy in the attack, and we created some very good opportunities. We had chances to get a few more earlier in the second half, but their keeper kept them in the game. Ultimately, Jarred [Dass] scored a good second goal to finish off the game."

Final: Stony Brook 2, UMBC 0
  • Togstad gave the Seawolves a lead at 16:19, heading a corner kick from Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway) just inside the far goal post to make it 1-0. The goal is Togstad's first-career score in two seasons at Stony Brook.
  • Dass helped the Seawolves add an insurance goal with 6:15 to go, pushing the ball from the middle of the field then blasting one into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The goal is the sophomore's second of the 2017 season.
  • McMahon made four saves in the shutout, earning his sixth win of the year. The senior made multiple diving saves throughout the night to help the program keep its lead and propel Stony Brook to the postseason. McMahon now has 14 career shutouts – which ranks No. 3 all-time for the Seawolves.
  • Stony Brook recorded 10 shots in total, and attempted four corners. The Seawolves held the advantage in shots on goal 7-4.
  • Dass and Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) both recorded a team-high three shots in the win.
