MUNICIE, Ind. -- Despite a strong first half from the field, the Stony Brook men's basketball team was unable to close things out as it fell at Ball State, 87-76, Friday night. Seniors
UC Iroegbu and
Junior Saintel notched career highs in the game as they led four Seawolves in double figures. Stony Brook falls to 0-3 on the year, while Ball State moves to 1-2.
Boals' Reaction
"I thought it was a tale of two halves, we knew that the most intense team that had the most energy and the most heart was going to win the game, and that was us for the first 20 minutes and it was them for the last 20 minutes," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "We competed for 40 minutes in each of our first two games. When shots aren't falling you have to get defensive stops and no one really stepped up, we need to get better at that."
Highlights
- Redshirt sophomore
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) was fouled on his first attempt of the night, but converted the four-point play to get things going for the Seawolves. Another three from senior
UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) gave Stony Brook an early 7-0 lead.
- Stony Brook took its largest lead of the night, going up nine with 6:43 remaining in the first half, but the Cardinals quickly responded with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game. The Seawolves only trailed briefly as senior
Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.) drained a three one minute later and knocked down two more to make it an eight-point game late in the half.
- The Seawolves led 42-34 at the break, shooting over 50-percent from everywhere on the floor.
- It was Yeboah again that got things started for Stony Brook in the second half, but early turnovers plagued the Seawolves and kept their lead to just one possession.
- After five ties around the midway point in the half Ball State used a 7-1 run to keep things in its favor the rest of the way. Stony Brook only got as close as four the rest of the way as it struggled from the free throw line late.
Notes
- Iroegbu's 18 points led the way for the Seawolves and notched a new career best for the senior. Saintel earned the second double-double of his career with career highs of 16 points and 10 boards. Iroegbu also finished with three assists in the game, all coming on Saintel dunks.
- Sturdivant continued his success from range, knocking down three threes for the second time this season.
