Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong night from beyond the arc not enough at No. 2 Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Seawolves made double-digit threes for the third time this season, but the strong night from beyond the arc wasn't enough to get them by No. 2 Michigan State as they fell, 93-71 at the Breslin Center Sunday evening. Freshman Elijah Olaniyi led the way with 16 points, as Stony Brook shot 50-percent from three-point range in the game.

Boals' Reaction
"I'm really proud of this group of guys," said head coach Jeff Boals. "Our goal was to come in and compete for 40 minutes, and I thought we did that. We led for most of the first half, they had a run late in the half to take a six-point halftime lead. The biggest thing for us was to get off to a good start, build some confidence, and we were able to hit some shots."

Highlights
  • Play was close to open the game, as Stony Brook was able to keep the lead early on.
  • Freshman Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) gave the Seawolves a huge spark off the bench, scoring 10 straight points, including a pair of threes. Redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) hit a three following the Olaniyi run to put the Seawolves up eight midway through the half.
  • Michigan State responded with six quick points to get back within two, but another three by Stony Brook, this time from senior Tyrell Sturdivant (Chester, Pa.), returned the difference to two possessions.
  • An 8-1 run by the Spartans in the closing minutes of the first half, positioned them to take a 44-38 lead into the break.
  • Michigan State laid in two quick ones to start the second half, forcing the Seawolves to burn an early timeout. Stony Brook responded, adding two more from beyond the arc following the break in action.
  • A 9-1 run by the Spartans put them up double figures and the Seawolves were never able to get back in it.

Notes
  • This was the first double-digit scoring game for Olaniyi, as he put up 12 of his 16 in the first half. Sturdivant also had a strong first half, scoring all 10 of his points in the opening period.
  • The Seawolves made 11 threes in the game, notching double figures for the third time this year. They have made at least nine threes each of the team's four games this season.
