Seawolves run over Lehigh to advance in 2017 NCAA Division I Football Championship


STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook football team advanced on to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division I Football Championship thanks to an offensive explosion that tallied over 600 yards of total offense and featured touchdowns from six different players in the 59-29 win over visiting Lehigh in the opening round on Saturday afternoon in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
 
The Seawolves (10-2, 7-1 CAA Football) had touchdowns from junior RB Donald Liotine (Medford, N.Y.),  senior RB Sherman Alston Jr. (Clifton, N.J.), senior RB Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), junior RB Jordan Gowens (Bellport, N.Y.), graduate WR Harrison Jackson (Round Hill, Va.) and junior TE Cal Daniels (Bethel, Conn.) in the victory over the Mountain Hawks (5-7, 5-1 Patriot League).
 
Stony Brook advance to face top-seeded James Madison next Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET. Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. on Monday by contacting the Seawolves Ticket Office 631-632-WOLF. 

Scoring
  • Stony Brook cracked the scoreboard first on the second play of the second half when RB Donald Liotine took it in the end zone from two yards out. The PAT by PK Nick Courtney was good. The drive was six plays for 46 yards.
  • Lehigh tied it up on the ensuing possession when QB Brad Mayes found WR Gatlin Casey with a two-yard pass. The PAT by PK Ed Mish was good, The drive was eight plays for 71 yards.
  • PK Nick Courtney nailed a 28-yard field goal with 8:37 left in the second quarter to give the Seawolves the lead. The drive was 10 plays for 73 yards.
  • The Seawolves added to their lead when RB Stacey Bedell scored from five yards out with 4:05 left in the second quarter. The PAT by PK Nick Courtney was good. The drive was eight plays for 59 yards.
  • RB Jordan Gowins added to the Stony Brook lead with a one-yard run with 3:10 left in the second quarter. The PAT by Nick Courtney was good. The drive was five plays for 29 yards and started when LB Isaiah White recovered a muffed kickoff by Lehigh.
  • Lehigh edged closer with a five-yard pass from QB Brad Mayes to WR Troy Pelletier with 1:25 left in the half. The PAT by PK Ed Mish. The drive was nine plays for 78 yards.
  • Stony Brook opened the second half with a 40-yard touchdown catch and run by TE Cal Daniels from QB Joe Carbone. The PAT by Nick Courtney was good. The drive was two plays for 70 yards.
  • RB Donald Liotine scored from 12 yards out with 12:03 left in the third quarter to add to the Seawolves' lead. The PAT by Nick Courtney was good. The drive was three plays for 47 yards.
  • Lehigh scored on the final play of the third quarter when QB Brad Mayes tossed a nine-yard pass to TB Dom Bragalone. The PAT by Ed Mish was good. The drive was seven plays for 49 yards.
  • The Mountain Hawks QB Matt Timochenko scored on a one-yard run with 11:45 left in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion was successful. The drive was 11 plays for 74 yards.
  • RB Jordan Gowins scored his second touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run with 5:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. The PAT by Nick Courtney was good. The drive was six plays for 46 yards.
  • Stony Brook capped the scoring with a 47-yard run by RB Sherman Alston Jr. with 2:44 left in the game. The PAT by Nick Courtney was good. The drive was two plays for 50 yards.

Notes
  • Stony Brook is now 3-2 all-time in the third appearance in the NCAA Division I  Championships. The Seawolves also improved to 3-0 in LaValle Stadium in the playoffs.
  • Stony Brook tied a school record with its 10th win of the season. The Seawolves also won 10 games in 2012.
  • The Seawolves won their sixth straight game, the longest winning streak since 2012 when they rallied for seven in a row.
  • Stony Brook's 622 Yards of total offense are the most since the Seawolves posted 693 yards against Pace on Sept. 8, 2012.
  • RB Donald Liotine scored his 16th and 17th career rushing touchdowns and ninth and 10th of the season with his two touchdowns today. It marked his third career multi-rushing touchdown game.
  • RB Donald Liotine's 133 Rushing yards in today's game marked the first 100-plus yard rushing game of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • RB Jordan Gowins scored his fifth and sixth rushing touchdowns of the season seventh and eighth of his career with his second-quarter and fourth quarter touchdowns.
  • RB Jordan Gowins recorded the second multi-touchdown game of his career.
  • RB Stacey Bedell scored the 31st touchdown of his career today when the senior scored in the second quarter. The score was his eighth of this season.
  • TE Cal Daniels pulled down his fourth career receiving touchdown and second of the season with a 40-yard catch and run in the third quarter.
  • QB Joe Carbone tossed his 21st touchdown of the season in the third quarter when he found TE Cal Daniels on a 40-yard strike. It marked Carbone's 26th touchdown pass of his career.
  • QB Joe Carbone tossed a pair of touchdowns on Saturday, marking the 12th time the junior tossed at least two scores in a game for his career and the 10th time this season.
  • QB Joe Carbone's 268 Passed for yards today and marked the fifth 200-plus yard passing game of his career.
  • WR Harrison Jackson pulled down his sixth touchdown reception of the season and his career with his 75-yard reception in the fourth quarter.
  • WR Harrison Jackson recorded his second100-yard receiving game of his career with three receptions for 122 yards on Saturday.
