Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cheyenne Clarks' big day helps lead Stony Brook past Wagner for fifth-straight win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball continued its undefeated start to the 2017-18 season on Sunday afternoon at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, topping Wagner, 69-50, in non-conference action.

With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-0 to begin season. The last time the program won five-straight contests to begin a season was in 1992-93.

Quoting Head Coach Caroline McCombs
"I thought Wagner played extremely hard tonight. They are very well coached, and forced us to be uncomfortable at times. Despite the slow start, I though we battled back and competed. We had a few different players step up tonight to help us get another win and keep the momentum going. As we continue to grow, I think our versatility will continue to be a strength."

Highlights
  • Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J) led the way for the Seawolves, recording a season-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Clark shot 5-of-12 from the floor while also sinking five foul shots in the win. The junior transfer is now averaging a team-best 8.8 rebounds per contest.
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, M.D.) chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists of her own. Johnson sunk a team-best four 3-pointers for the Seawolves.
  • India Pagan (New London, Conn.) recorded a career-high 12 points and four assists.
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) added nine points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) added six points and six assists off the bench. The sophomore is averaging 4.2 assists per contest.
Notes
  • Wagner jumped out to an early advantage, leading 8-2 with 7:10 left in the first quarter. Stony Brook battled back, however, going on a 13-4 run of its own to close the first quarter with a 15-12 edge.
  • The Seawolves then closed the second quarter on a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 38-26 at the break. Perez found Johnson for a corner 3-pointer, Worley delivered a perfect pass to Clark under the basket for the lay in, and Perez drove to the basket for two as time expired in the half.
  • The Seawolves shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor, converting on 6-of-15 3-point attempts.
  • Stony Brook out-rebounded Wagner 35-28, and recorded 40 points in the paint to the Seahawks 28.
