STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball got back on track on Thursday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, topping Iona, 63-46, in non-conference action.
With the win, the Seawolves move to 6-4 so far in 2017-18.

"It was great to be at home in front of our fans tonight. I thought we were able to create a lot of offense from our defense. We also executed our half-court offense well, and were really solid defensively. I was proud of our group for being resilient in their efforts."
Highlights
- Stony Brook shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) in the win, knocking down 6-of-16 3-point attempts.
- The Seawolves outscored Iona in the paint 36-26, and generated 29 points off turnovers. Stony Brook made seven free throws, which ties a season high.
- Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) led the way for Stony Brook, tallying 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in the win. The junior transfer shot 6-of-9 from the floor, nailing three 3-point shots.
- Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) added 13 points of her own to go along with three rebounds and three assists. The junior has recorded double-digit point totals in each of her last five contests.
- Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and four assists. The sophomore buried her first 3-point field goal of the season as time expired at the end of the first half of play.
- Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J) scored six points and grabbed six rebounds, knocking down 4-of-6 free throw attempts.
- India Pagan (New London, Conn.) tallied eight points on 4-of-5 shooting, as well.
Notes
- Iona started strong, heading into the first media timeout with a 9-6 lead. The Seawolves then closed out the final 2:29 of the first on a 12-3 run, capped off by McKenzie Bushee's (Pittsburgh, PA.) offensive rebound and put-back in the final seconds of the quarter.
- Stony Brook led 33-27 at halftime, shooting 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the floor. The Seawolves scored 20 points in the paint in the first half of action. Perez nailed a 3-pointer as the second quarter came to a close, giving Stony Brook a six-point lead at the break.
- The Seawolves then outscored Iona 18-11 in the third quarter of action, and 12-8 in the fourth. Johnson tallied 11 of her 15 total points in the second half, going 4-for-4 from the floor (3-for-3 from 3-point range) in that span.
