Stony Brook returns home on Wednesday night for contest vs. Yale

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball is set to return to Island Federal Credit Union Arena on Wednesday, playing host to Yale in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out
  • Despite erasing a 17-point deficit to lead at halftime, Stony Brook women's basketball fell in non-conference play at Syracuse, 81-70, on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. With the loss, the Seawolves move to 5-2 (0-0 AE) so far this year.
  • The Seawolves shot 39.7 percent from the floor, sinking four 3-pointers in the loss.
  • Syracuse opened the contest on a 13-0 run over the game's first 2:59. Following a timeout, the Seawolves responded with a 7-2 run of their own. Bushee scored back-to-back buckets after the break in action, then Matthews knocked down Stony Brook's first 3-pointer of the afternoon with 4:59 left in the first quarter.
  • The Seawolves then held Syracuse scoreless for eight-plus minutes between the first and second quarter. The Orange made a bucket with 2:07 left in the first, then didn't score again until the 4:02 mark in the second. Stony Brook went on a 16-0 run of its own during that period of time, cutting the Syracuse lead to just one point.
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) had a team-high 21 points to go along with seven assists for the Seawolves. The junior transfer made four 3-pointers.
  • McKenzie Bushee (Pittsburgh, PA.) had a season-high 14 points and six rebounds, shooting 7-of-9 from the field.
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds of her own. The junior now has three double-digit point total performances in 2017-18.
Scouting Yale
  • Yale checks in at 4-3 so far in 2017-18, topping America East opponent Binghamton, 73-69, its last time out.
  • The Bulldogs are led offensively by Tamara Simpson, who has scored 16.8 points per contest this year. Jen Berkowitz has chipped in with 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, and Roxy Barahman is averaging 13.4 points and 5.3 rebounds.
  • The Seawolves are 3-2 all-time vs. Yale. The Bulldogs won the last meeting between the two programs, 62-57, on Dec. 12, 2015.
 Head Coach Caroline McCombs
  • Caroline McCombs enters her fourth season as the head coach of the Stony Brook women's basketball team in 2017-18, as the Seawolves head coach has risen among the winningest coaches in Stony Brook's Division I era.
  • With five victories to begin the 2017-18 season, McCombs has now won 51 games on Long Island – which ranks second among Stony Brook coaches in the Division I era. McCombs guided the Seawolves' program to 17 wins in 2014-15, 17 victories in 2015-16, and 12 wins in 2016-17.
Daunting Defense
Stony Brook has allowed just 51.9 points per contest, which ranks No. 6 in the nation entering Wednesday's action. The program has forced opponents to shoot just 21.2 percent from beyond the arc, which checks in at No. 5 nationally. Opponents have shot just 34.3 percent from the floor vs. the Seawolves, which ranks 23rd lowest in the country.
 
Elite from the Field
The Seawolves have shot 43.3 percent from the floor over the first seven contests of the season, which ranks No. 1 in the America East.
 
Non-Conference Success
Stony Brook is 10-3 in its last 13 non-conference contests, dating back to Dec. 11, 2016.

Preseason Poll
The Seawolves have been selected to finish No. 8 in the 2017-18 America East Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference on Oct. 19, 2017. Stony Brook received 16 total votes in the poll. New Hampshire was voted as the unanimous league favorite, garnering 64 total votes.
