Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong second half lifts Stony Brook past New Hampshire, 64-61

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – It was a familiar scene for the Stony Brook men's basketball team as the down-to-the-wire finish was nearly reenacted from the first meeting between the Seawolves and the New Hampshire Wildcats. Stony Brook (12-10, 7-2 AE) was able to hang on for the home win, topping New Hampshire (14-9, 5-4 AE), 64-61, at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Wednesday night.

Boals' Reaction
"It was almost a carbon copy of the game [at New Hampshire]," said head coach Jeff Boals. "At halftime we talked about how it was the same situation as before, and we talked about some of the things that we didn't do that we needed to do. I think New Hampshire is a very good defensive team and we made the adjustments we needed to in the second half. Hats off to Lucas Woodhouse, I thought he was phenomenal. He made play, after play, after play, and then at the end we found a way to win the game and we made some big stops."

Highlights
  • After a slow start to the game for both teams, New Hampshire put together a 10-2 run to create some distance early in the game. The Wildcats extended their lead to double figures with under three minutes to play in the first half and took an eight-point lead into the break.
  • Stony Brook took over in the opening minutes of the second half, going on a 16-2 tear to regain its early lead.
  • A pair of threes for the Wildcats following the scoring drought got them back within one midway through the half.
  • A three-point play by senior Lucas Woodhouse (Greenlawn, N.Y.) followed immediately by a steal and a three from senior Kameron Mitchell (Jacksonville, Fla.), on a give-and-go with his classmate, quickly returned the difference to nine in Stony Brook's favor.
  • The Wildcats drained a three on three straight possessions to make it a three-point game with under six minutes to play.
  • Stony Brook never lost its lead in the closing minutes. A late foul by the Seawolves sent New Hampshire's Tanner Leissner to the line with a chance to tie the game. He hit one-of two with 35 seconds on the clock.
  • Junior Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) go ahold of the loose rebound and this time around it was Woodhouse who took it straight to the basket to make it three-point game and seal the win with 10 seconds remaining.
Notes
  • Woodhouse neared a triple-double for the second time this season, finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. This also marks the third straight game the senior has scored 20-plus points.
  • All three field goals from Junior Saintel (Mays Landing, N.J.) came on dunks. He has 20 so far this season.
  • The Seawolves outscored New Hampshire 38-20 in the paint.
  • Stony Brook has now seen 11 of its 22 games this season be decided in the final minute of play.
  • The Seawolves finished with 10 turnovers in the game; marking the 14th time this year they have kept the total to 10-or-fewer.
