STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team held on to edge out Maine, topping the Black Bears, 67-66, on a late free throw at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves made it four straight victories as they move to 15-10 on the year and 10-2 in league play. Maine falls to 6-22 overall, 2-11 in conference.
Boals' Reaction
"I give a lot of credit to Maine, I thought they did a good job mixing up their defenses, they are a tough matchup," said head coach
Jeff Boals. "I've said from day one that pretty much 2-9 in this league could win home or away on any given night. The fact that we are sitting where we are sitting, in second place, we know other teams are going to come at us. I'm really proud of our guys for finding a way to win the game."
Highlights
- Maine came out hot from beyond the arc, making its first three attempts of the game which all came from beyond the arc. The Black Bears continued to push and eventually went up 11 with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
- Stony Brook responded to the double-digit difference as juniors Bryan Sekunda (State College, Pa.) and Roland Nyama (Frankfurt, Germany) went back-to-back from three-point range and Nyama added a layup to cut it to one.
- The difference remained within a possession and the Seawolves were able to tie it twice before regaining their lead from the start of the game.
- An 8-0 run for Stony Brook to close out the first half put the team up six at the break as Nyama neared his game total from the previous game with 16 first-half points.
- The second half began much like the first as the Seawolves were slow to get going and Maine got it going early, stringing together a 12-2 run in the opening minutes to go back on top.
- Junior Jakub Petras (Rajec, Slovakia ) went on a scoring spree of his own around the midway point in the half scoring six of Stony Brook's eight points in just over a two-minute span to put the game back in his team's favor.
- The lead would change hands six more times in the final eight minutes of the game.
- With 27 seconds on the clock, Maine's Jaquan McKennon went to the line and missed the first but made the second to tie it at 66-all.
- A late attempt by the Seawolves from three went out-of-bounds and Maine had a chance to decide it. The Black Bears threw the ball the length of the court but it never landed in bounds and Stony Brook got the ball back for another go at the lead.
- The ball was in-bounded to Nyama, who was fouled on the attempted tip-in with 0.5 on the clock. He made the first shot and intentionally missed the second in hopes the time would run off. Maine's final in-bound pass was intercepted as the buzzer sounded.
Notes
