STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's basketball team returns to the road on Wednesday, traveling across the Sound to take on Hartford. The Seawolves recently made it four straight victories with a last-second win over Maine. The Hawks are looking to make it three straight after claiming an overtime victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday.
NOTEWORTHY
- Roland Nyama posted a then-season-best 19 points in the win over UMass Lowell, following it up with a career-best 26 points and the game-winning free throw against Maine. He was name America East Player of the Week for his performances.
- Lucas Woodhouse laid in the game-winner against UNH and neared a triple-double for the second time this season, leading the team with nine rebounds and nine assists. He rounded out the week with his fourth-straight 20-plus point game, finishing with 23, in the win at Albany. He was named America East co-Player of the Week for his performances.
- Tyrell Sturdivant is averaging 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in league play.
-Jakub Petras gave the Seawolves a big lift of the bench last week, scoring a career-high nine points in the wins over UMass Lowell and Maine, adding at least four rebounds in each outing.
- The Seawolves tallied a season-high seven dunks in the win over UMass Lowell. UC Iroegbu, Jakub Petras and Tyrell Sturdivant all got up for their first dunks of the season.
- Stony Brook has limited itself to single-digit turnovers 10 times this season, committing 10 or fewer on 16 occasions, sitting at 31st in the nation in turnover margin.
- Stony Brook has seen 12 of its 25 games so far this season be decided in the final minute of play.
THE OPPONENT
Hartford enters the midweek game at 8-19 on the year, 3-9 in America East play. The Hawks made it back-to-back wins on Sunday as they topped UMass Lowell 87-84 in overtime at home. Hartford was without Jalen Ross, who leads teh league in scoring (20.1ppg), due to injury, but Jason Dunne stepped up, leading four players in double figures with 29 points. Prior to the overtime thriller, the Hawks topped UMBC on the road, snapping a six-game skid.
THE SERIES
Stony Brook leads the all-time series with the Hawks 22-14. The first meeting was Jan. 26, 2002, when Hartford took a 76-70 win at home. After dropping the first six games in the series, the Seawolves have recently taken 18 of the last 19 matchups, and are in the midst of a nine-game streak against Hartford. Stony Brook took the first meeting this season at home, 80-64, as part of its five-game winning streak to open league play. Senior Lucas Woodhouse led four players in double figures with 18 points in the game.
The two teams have met five times in the post season and the Seawolves sit at 4-1 against Hartford in the America East Tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
Stony Brook rallied to top Maine in the final minute of play, edging out the Black Bears 67-66 Sunday afternoon. Maine came out hot from beyond the arc, making its first three attempts of the game which all came from beyond the arc. The Black Bears continued to push and eventually went up 11 with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
Stony Brook responded to the double-digit difference as juniors Bryan Sekunda and Roland Nyama went back-to-back from three and Nyama added a layup to cut it to one. The difference remained within a possession and the Seawolves were able to tie it twice before regaining the lead from the start of the game.
An 8-0 run for Stony Brook to close out the first half put the team up six at the break as Nyama neared his game total from the previous game with 16 first-half points.
The second half began much like the first as the Seawolves were slow to get going and Maine got it going early, stringing together a 12-2 run in the opening minutes to go back on top. With 27 seconds on the clock, Maine's Jaquan McKennon went to the line and missed the first but made the second to tie it at 66-all.
A late attempt by the Seawolves from three went out-of-bounds and Maine had a chance to decide it. The Black Bears threw the ball the length of the court but it never landed in bounds and Stony Brook got the ball back for another go at the lead. The ball was in-bounded to Nyama, who was fouled on the attempted tip-in with 0.5 on the clock. He made the first shot.
HIGH PERFORMANCE WEEK
Junior Roland Nyama has been hot for the Seawolves as of late. After a strong second half to help Stony Brook top Albany on the road, he responded in the quick turnaround with a then-season best 19 points to lead the Seawolves past UMass Lowell just two days later. He closed out the week as the catalyst for Stony Brook against Maine. He scored 16 of his career-best 26 points in the first half and sealed the victory, making a free throw with 0.5 left on the clock to put the Seawolves up one. Nyama was named America East Player of the Week for the first time in his career for his outstanding play.
TWENTY-PLUS
Senior Lucas Woodhouse has been a leader for the Seawolves all season, especially on the offensive end. He recently strung together four-straight 20-plus points games against the top five teams in the America East. Woodhouse has surpassed the 20-point mark seven times this season.
FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE
Woodhouse is ranked 16th in the nation and tied for first in the league from the free throw line, shooting 91-percent from the line on the year. Woodhouse made 30 consecutive free throws to begin conference play.
Earlier in the year against Northeastern, Woodhouse went 8-for-8 in the final 1:38 of the win before setting a new career best the next game with 12 makes on 12 attempts against Lehigh.
As a team, the Seawolves are shooting 72.9 from the line, good for 87th in the country.
CLEAN PLAY
Stony Brook has limited itself in turnovers all season, keeping the number in single digits on 10 occasions. The Seawolves rank 18th in the nation in turnover margin (3.8). They have committed more turnovers than their opponent on just three occasions this year. Stony Brook most recently had just eight mishaps against Maine.
