Stony Brook takes down Sacred Heart in season opener

Fairfield, Conn. –The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team started the 2017 season with a win over Sacred Heart, 12-11, on the road Tuesday afternoon.Freshman Tom Haun lead the way for the Seawolves with four goals and senior Alex Corpolongo added three goals and two assists to lift Stony Brook over Sacred Heart, Tuesday Feb. 14th at Sacred Heart. 
 
Nagle's Reaction
"I am proud of the way our team fought back after being down at the half," said head coach Jim Nagle.  "You never know what to expect with early season games.  We have a lot of room for development, but I am happy for the guys today."
 
Highlights
  • Stony Brook got off to a quick start with a goal from Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) at the nine -minute mark.
  • Freshman Tom Haun (Sachem, N.Y.) picked up the second goal of the game and his first of his collegiate career off of Coprolongo's assist.
  • The Pioneers would have the next four goals and lead the Seawolves early into the second quarter.
  • Sophomore Ryland Rees (P. Coquitlam, Bristish Columbia) put away his first goal to bring the Seawolves within one, 3-4 with 11:25 left in the second quarter.
  • Haun added two more goals in the second quarter for the Stony Brook to take the lead, but Sacred Heart returned with four unanswered goals and to lead 8-5 going into halftime. 
  • Freshman Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) scored his first two goals of his collegiate career in a minutes' span to start the third quarter.  
  • Haun added his fourth goal of the day to tie it, but Sacred Heart would answer.
  • Corpolongo and senior Jeff Reh (Sound Beach, N.Y.) responded for the Seawolves to regain the one-goal advantage with 11:52 left in the fourth quarter.  
  • The Pioneers tied it up once more but freshman Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) would get his first collegiate goal and put the Seawolves on top 11-10.
  • Sacred Heart tied it up for the last time with a minute and thirty seconds left in the game. 
  • Corpolongo scored his third goal of the game with 40 second left on the clock for the Seawolves to win 12-11. 
Notes
  • Sophomores Michael Hart (North Babylon, N.Y.) and James Gerstner (Albertson, N.Y.) made their first career starts for Stony Brook as well as freshman Cory Vanginhoven and Tom Haun
  • Freshman Wanye White, Vanginhoven, and Haun all recorded their first collegiate goals.
  • Junior Brandon Maciejewski (Penn Yan, N.Y.) picked up his second career win.
