Seawolves claw to victory over Presbyterian in 11 innings


CLINTON, S.C. – A five-run 11th inning by the Stony Brook baseball team led the Seawolves to a 7-3 extra-inning victory over Presbyterian in the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at PC Baseball Complex.  
 
The Seawolves (1-4) plated their five runs on just three hits, including triples by junior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) and senior 1B Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). Junior 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) also singled to drive in the go-ahead run in the inning as well.
 
Baker finished the game with three hits, including a pair of triples, while freshmen Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) each collected two hits. Grande got the Stony Brook on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run, the first hit of his collegiate career.
 
Junior Cam Stone (West Haven, Conn.) earned the victory. He tossed 3.0 innings and gave up one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
 
Turning Point
Stony Brook junior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) tripled to left center field with one out in the top of the 11th inning and came in to score when junior 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) reached safely on a bunt down the third base line. That run opened game the Seawolves the lead and opened the flood games that led to a five-run inning.

"I'm really proud of the way the team bounced back from yesterday's tough loss and kept fighting all game to get today's win. We are looking forward to picking up we're we left off and hopefully earn our first series win of the season."

Notes
  • Freshman RHP Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ontario) recorded his first collegiate start on Saturday.
  • Turcotte scattered five hits, surrendered one run and struck out six in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Freshman SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) started his first collegiate game.
  • Grande's recorded his first career hit in the fifth inning. It was a solo home run. He added a single in the sixth inning for his first career multi-hit game.
  • Freshman DH Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) registered a pair of singles on Saturday for his second career multi-hit game.
  • Senior 1B Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) tripled in the ninth inning and the 11th inning for his 10th and 11th career three-baggers. That moves him into eighth on Stony Brook's career list.
  • Baker finished with three hits for his second multi-hit game of the season.
  • Junior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) tripled in the 11th inning for his seventh of his career.
