STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook men's basketball team has a quick turnaround as it returns home to host UMass Lowell Monday night after topping Albany on the road Saturday night. The same is true for the River Hawks, who topped Binghamton at home on Saturday afternoon before traveling to New York. The Seawolves have come out on top in three of their last four games and four of their last five home games.
NOTEWORTHY
- Lucas Woodhouse laid in the game-winner against UNH and neared a triple-double for the second time this season, leading the team with nine rebounds and nine assists. He rounded out the week with his fourth-straight 20-plus point game, finishing with 23, in the win at Albany.
- Woodhouse is tied for seventh the nation in free throw percentage. He made his first 30 free throw attempts of America East play. His 2.93 assist-turnover ratio leads the league and ranks 24th in the country.
- Tyrell Sturdivant is averaging 14.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in league play.
- Roland Nyama gave the Seawolves a big lift in the win at Albany, scoring 11 of his 14 points in the second half.
- Junior Saintel added eight points in the win over UNH, with all three field goals coming off of dunks. He leads the team with 20 so far this season.
- Akwasi Yeboah notched the first double-double of his career with 15 points and 10 boards in the win over UMBC.
- Stony Brook has limited itself to single-digit turnovers nine times this season, committing 10 or fewer on 14 occasions, sitting at 31st in the nation in turnover margin.
- Stony Brook has seen 11 of its 23 games so far this season be decided in the final minute of play.
THE OPPONENT
UMass Lowell enters the Monday game at 10-15 on the year and 4-6 in league play. The River Hawks are just 2-11 on the road this season. They recently snapped a five-game skid with a 60-59 win over Binghamton at home Saturday afternoon.
Jahad Thomas currently leads the league in rebounding and field goal percentage, while ranking third in scoring. Matt Harris is also atop the league standings in free throw percentage.
THE SERIES
Stony Brook has never dropped a game to the River Hawks in seven meetings. The two teams first met on Jan. 18, 2014, when the Seawolves took a 70-65 win. Stony Brook has claimed three home wins and four road wins in the series, after topping the River Hawks 86-75 in Lowell earlier in year. UMass Lowell is currently in its final transitional season, moving up to Division I.
Junior Tyrell Sturdivant shined in the first meeting this season, he reached double figures in the first 4:10 of play and finished with a career-best 28 points. The River Hawks battled back late to get back within two but Sturdivant scored seven straight points to keep the game in Stony Brook's favor.
LAST TIME OUT
The Seawolves made it back-to-back wins as they knocked off Albany 72-65 in Saturday night. Play remained close throughout the first half, as the game saw three ties and eight lead changes. Stony Brook went on a run early to go up six, but the Great Danes quickly got back in it and neither team led by more than a possession the rest of the half.
The Seawolves opened the second half on a 9-2 run and used a steady push midway through the half to take their largest lead of the night, up 58-45.
Albany used an 8-0 run to get back within six with 3:46 left to play, hanging around in the closing minutes.
The Great Danes hit a big three with 46 seconds on the clock to get back within four, but were forced to foul and never able to get any closer. The win marked the first time Stony Brook has swept Albany since the 2012-13 season.
FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE
Senior Lucas Woodhouse is tied for seventh in the nation and second in the league from the free throw line, shooting 92-percent from the line on the year. Woodhouse made 30 consecutive free throws to begin conference play.
Earlier in the year against Northeastern, Woodhouse went 8-for-8 in the final 1:38 of the win before setting a new career best the next game with 12 makes on 12 attempts against Lehigh.
As a team, the Seawolves are shooting 73.2 from the line, good for 78th in the country.
HELPING HAND
Woodhouse currently leads the America East and is tied for 46th in the nation with 5.2 assists per game. Woodhouse also sits at 24th in the country in assist-turnover ratio (2.93) while the team ranks 52nd (1.25). Against Vermont, Woodhouse dished out five assists and did not commit a turnover. This marked the fourth time this season he has not had a turnover while tallying at least four assists.
