Game Recap: Baseball |

Stony Brook falls to UCSB despite a two-hit, two-RBI day by Handley

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) continued to swing a hot bat with a pair of hits and two RBI for the Stony Brook baseball team, but the Seawolves dropped game two of the series at UCSB 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Handley, who had two hits yesterday and has now hit safely in nine of his last 11 games, singled home a run in the fifth inning and hit a run-scoring triple in the seventh. He also scored the Seawolves (4-12) third run of the game when senior RF Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) drove him in following the triple. Senior 3B Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.) added a pair of singles and an RBI, while sophomore 2B Brandon Janofsky (Jackson, N.J.) also drove in a run.

The Gouchos (7-10), who had a pair of big innings in Friday's win, opened the game with a five-run first inning that proved too much to overcome.

Junior RHP Nick Montefusco (Medford, N.J.) and junior LHP Teddy Rodliff (Quincy, Ma.) each pitched well in relief for Stony Brook. Montefusco allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work, while Rodliff struck out all four batters he faced.

Turning Point
UCSB once again jumped out early with five runs in the first inning on four hits.

Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"We put ourselves in another huge hole after the first, but the bullpen did a really good job and from there we played a solid game the rest of the way. We're looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
