STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Five straight goals in the third quarter helped the No. 18 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team get by Fairfield, 9-6, in its home opener at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves move to 4-0 on the season, marking the best start in program history, as head coach
Jim Nagle earned the 200
th win of his coaching career.
Nagle's Reaction
"I think Fairfield is a good team," said head coach
Jim Nagle. "Brown was going to run with us and give us opportunities to run, but Fairfield is much more conservative and held back our running game a little bit. I thought in the third quarter we used our speed on the ride and that really turned the tables. In those first eight minutes I don't think they had a real possession on offense because of our ride and our team speed."
Highlights
- Fairfield was able to get on the board first, scoring the only goal in the first quarter, but freshman Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) tied things at one when he put away a pass from senior Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.) to begin the second quarter.
- The Stags were able to regain the lead with 8:44 remaining until halftime, but Bitzer quickly countered, scoring a goal of his own on a pass from sophomore James Gerstner (Albertson, N.Y.) 29 seconds later.
- Fairfield tacked on two more goals to take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
- Stony Brook came out and immediately controlled the momentum in the second half as freshman Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) sparked what would be a five-goal spree for the Seawolves just 2:39 into the new quarter. Senior Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) struck twice in the run, while freshmen Connor Grippe (Setauket, N.Y.) and Tom Haun (Sachem, N.Y.) added goals as well to put Stony Brook up 7-4 by the end of the third quarter.
- The Stags made it a two-goal game with 8:02 remaining, but senior Jeff Reh (Sound Beach, N.Y.) sent a strong shot over the goalie's left shoulder and VanGinhoven buried his second of the day to give the Seawolves a cushion in the closing minutes.
