STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team travels to New Mexico for more tournament play this weekend, facing the host Lobos as well as Santa Clara. The Seawolves will begin play on Friday, March 10 with a game against each opponent and play the same schedule the following day before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, March 12 with a final game against the Broncos.
Scouting the Seawolves
Stony Brook is in search of its first win since opening weekend, sitting at 1-8 on the season. The Seawolves were unable to pick up a victory at the Purple/Gold Challenge in Nashville despite rounding out the weekend of play with some of their best play of the young season. After falling to Valparaiso to start the weekend the Seawolves trailed by seven after the first two innings in a rematch on Sunday. Stony Brook put together a seven-run fourth inning to tie the game up, and rallied late after the Crusaders regained the lead in the sixth, but came up one run shy.
Freshman
Jourdin Hering (Federal Way, Wash.) has been one of the most consistent performers for the Seawolves so far this season. She leads the team, hitting .357 and has 10 hits through the team's nine games. Junior
Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) had a breakout performance in Nashville, tallying five hits and five RBI in the weekend finale. Freshman
Melissa Rahrich (Brighton, Colo.) has logged 23.1 innings in the circle, giving up 33 hits while striking out 16 batters.
The Opponents
Stony Brook will open the weekend against Santa Clara, facing the California squad three times through three days. The Broncos enter the weekend at 4-11 on the year. They began the season going 2-2 through a home tournament on opening weekend, but stumbled the following weekend with a 1-4 record at the Santa Clara Invitational. The Broncos are coming off a weekend in Boise, Idaho, where they were able to pick up a 7-4 win over Weber State.
Morgan Modesto leads Santa Clara at the plate, hitting .372 on the season with 16 hits, including six doubles. Michaela Vierra has been the Bronco's go-to in the circle this season. She sits at 2-4 through nine appearances, giving up 41 hits while striking out 22 batters in 36.1 innings.
The Seawolves will take on New Mexico in the second game of the day on both Friday and Saturday. The Lobos sit at 10-10 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with UTEP Wednesday afternoon, taking the first game 7-6 before falling 7-4 in the second. New Mexico has picked up wins in four of its last five outings, taking two of three against Northern Colorado over the weekend.
Jasmine Casados is hitting .431 on the season. Having started all 20 games, she has tallied 28 hits and 15 RBI so far this season. Three of the Lobos' four pitchers boast .500-or-better records, combining for all but one decision. Tess McPherson has logged 54.2 innings in the circle, sitting at 4-4 through 12 appearances. McPherson has a 3.84 ERA and has given up 52 hits, striking out 24 batters.
Newcomers Debut
All seven newcomers made their Stony Brook debuts during opening weekend. Hering led the group with six hits through the five games. Hering, along with Rahrich have started every game of their young careers. Rahrich debuted in the circle in game number two, picking up Stony Brook's only win of the weekend. She threw 11.2 innings through the weekend, fanning seven batters and giving up 13 hits. Freshman
