Clarke brothers reunited as members of Stony Brook's baseball team

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - When the Stony Brook baseball team took the field in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to open the 2017 season, it was a pretty special moment for a pair of brothers from Pennsylvania.

Cody Clarke, a graduate student and a first baseman for the Seawolves, and his younger brother Bret, a sophomore pitcher, took the field together at Joe Miller BallPark for the first time since they were young kids. Cody was the starting first baseman and Bret was on the mound as the starting pitcher.

"It was really awesome to look over there and see him," Bret said of the moment. "Finally playing together after 20 years really. It was pretty cool."

"It adds a whole different competitive level to being brothers, but you're playing division I baseball," Cody said. "It presents a new challenge and it's fun to be able to do that together."

The pair from Royersford, Pennsylvania, were born three years apart and never had the opportunity to play together in at Spring-Ford High School or even in little league. They could only remember playing on the same team together only one other time.

"In high school we played together for a little bit of one summer," Cody said. "But, it was nothing like this."

So far this season, Bret, the 2016 America East Rookie of the Year, has started 10 games on the mound and has a pair of wins. Cody has started 11 games at either 1B or designated hitter and has nine hits, including four doubles.

In addition to the season-opening game at McNeese State, the two have appeared in the same game four more times, including both starting at Presbyterian on Feb. 24.

Bret and Cody, along with their teammates, host five games at Joe Nathan Field this week. The Seawolves welcome Marist at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, host Fairfield at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and America East Conference foe Maine comes to town for a three-game series that gets underway with a doubleheader at Noon on Saturday and concludes with a single game at Noon on Sunday.
