Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Stony Brook falls to Binghamton in overtime

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – It took over time for the second straight game, but the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team was unable to pull out the victory in the regular season finale, falling to Binghamton 6-5 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium Friday evening. The Seawolves, who move to 7-6 on the year, 3-3 in the America East, await their post season fate following a pair of league games on Saturday. Binghamton secured a spot in the Championships as it now sits at 10-4, finishing with a 4-2 conference record.

Nagle's Reaction
"It was a hard fought game, but I was really impressed with their goalie," said head coach Jim Nagle. "At this point in the season there are a lot of one-goal games and you can't hang your head. You have to keep playing. It was disappointing tonight, but their goalie saved the ball 13 times, but we shot the ball better, just couldn't get it into the goal."

Highlights
  • Binghamton controlled the momentum early, as leading scorer Tom Moore took advantage of an early turnover in transition and added a second goal minutes later.
  • Freshman Chis Pickel, Jr. (Bayport, N.Y.) got Stony Brook on the board with 6:27 left in the first quarter as he buried a pass from senior Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.).
  • The Bearcats made it a 3-1 game late in the first quarter, but Stony Brook responded with back-to-back goals in the closing minutes.
  • Freshman Harrison Matsuoka (Calgary, Alberta) quickly brought a Binghamton turnover down field, feeding sophomore Ryland Rees (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) who drew back to shoot, but found freshman Cory VanGinhoven (Fort Mill, N.C.) near the cage for the score.
  • Bitzer earned his second assist of the day when he helped on a Jeff Reh (Sound Beach, N.Y.) goal with under a minute remaining.
  • It was a defensive standoff in the second quarter as neither team was able to find the back of the goal. Freshman Michael Bollinger (Sachem, N.Y.) made a huge save for the Seawolves on Binghamton's final attempt of the half to keep things tied a three apiece at the break.
  • Rees got things going for Stony Brook in the second half with an unassisted goal 25 seconds into the new period.
  • Moore answered for the Bearcats to tie the game at four, but senior Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) fired in a pass from freshman Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) with 8:41 left in the third quarter to put the game back in Stony Brook's favor.
  • Bollinger came up with a big stop less than a minute later to preserve the lead midway through the third.
  • The Seawolves turned it over following a timeout and Binghamton was able to create an open look on the left side in transition to even things up with 1:25 to play.
  • The Bearcats won the ensuing face-off and after a timeout, Joe Licata put away the game-winner with 2:51 on the clock.

Notes
  • Bitzer and Corpolongo both able to extend their streaks in the game as Bitzer has now earned a point in 34 straight games and Corpolongo has scored a goal in 31 consecutive outings.
  • Bitzer's two assists in the game give him 62 in his career, tying him for ninth all-time at Stony Brook.
  • This was the first multi-point game of the season for Rees.
