STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Freshman RHP
Sam Turcotte (Toronto, Ontario) struck out nine and allowed just five hits in 6.2 innings of work on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field to earn his first collegiate victory and guide the Stony Brook baseball team to a 9-3 win over visiting Sacred Heart in the first game of the four game series.
Senior CF
Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) and senior 1B
Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) led the Seawolves' (12-14) 12- hit offensive attack with three hits each, including a double and triple by Handley and a double by Baker. Junior 3B
Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) and junior LF
Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits.
Turning Point
Stony Brook plated three runs on three hits, including RBI singles from both Honeyman and Gazzola, to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sacred Heart (7-18) would never get closer than that margin.
Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"This was a great start to the weekend. Pitching, more times than not, sets the tone for the game and Sam (Turcotte) gave us a terrific start. We kept doing some really good things at the plate, especially Casey (Baker),
Toby Handley) and
Bobby Honeyman."
