Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Seawolves edged out by No. 13 Princeton late

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – It was a tight battle all night, but the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team was unable to come out on top, falling to No. 13 Princeton 13-11 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium Saturday night. The game saw seven ties and four lead changes as neither team led by more than two goals at any point. The Seawolves move to 5-5 on the year, while Princeton sits at 7-3.

Nagle's Reaction
"Princeton is a good team. I thought we came out and were inspired, we played hard, but we just aren't ready to win that game," said head coach Jim Nagle. "We need to be more accountable in our roles. It was disappointing, for sure; we shouldn't have given them a lot of the goals they were able to get. We have a team that is competitive right now, but now accountable enough to get to the next level and that will be our challenge in the next three weeks."

Highlights
  • Stony Brook got going with a pair of early goals to start the game. It closed out the first quarter with a 3-1 lead after freshman Harrison Matsuoka (Calgary, Alberta) hurried the ball down the field and found senior Ryan Bitzer (Riverhead, N.Y.) who went behind-the-back to freshman Wayne White (Huntington, N.Y.) as he fell to the ground. White pulled the ball out, but had junior Tyler Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) wide open, and the long stick middie fired one in to keep the momentum in Stony Brook's favor.
  • Princeton didn't waste much time in the second quarter, going back-to-back early on to tie things up at three, but the Seawolves responded with a pair of their own goals to regain the advantage.
  • The Tigers strung together three straight scores to take their first lead of the game, 6-5, with 3:16 remaining until halftime.
  • Senior Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) tied the game at six with just over two minutes left in the second quarter and Bitzer gave the Seawolves the lead at the break after he sent a shot between the goalie's legs with .8 seconds on the clock.
  • Production slowed in the third quarter for both teams as play remained close. Princeton evened things up to start the third quarter, but the Seawolves didn't trail in the period.
  • The Tigers struck first in the fourth quarter to take the lead and Stony Brook was able to respond as freshman Tom Haun (Sachem, N.Y.) buried a pass from Bitzer.
  • The two teams again traded goals before Princeton put away two straight and was able to hang on to the difference for the win.
Notes
  • Freshman Michael Bollinger (Sachem, N.Y.) made his third straight start in goal and came up big for the Seawolves throughout the night. He finished with nine saves.
  • Corpolongo and Bitzer each extended their streaks in the game, as Corpolongo has now scored in 28 straight games and Bitzer has had a point in 30 straight outings.
  • Haun's hat trick marks the fifth time this season he has put away multiple goals in a game.
  • The Seawolves are now 1-3 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
