STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's soccer fell to Northeastern, 1-0, in its 2017 season opener on Friday evening at Parsons Field.
The Seawolves move to 0-1-0 with the loss to the Huskies – last year's CAA regular season and conference tournament champion. Stony Brook recorded five shots (four on goal) in the loss, and attempted three corner kicks.
Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"I think we're all disappointed in the result, but I believe this game provided many teachable moments for our group and now we need to learn from them. Northeastern is a good side and has some very good attacking players. We have quite a few positives to take away from this match and look forward to playing at LaValle on Sunday."
Final: Northeastern 1, Stony Brook 0.
- Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) started her first collegiate game, recording six saves for the Seawolves.
- Eve Goulet netted Northeastern's loan goal, heading in a corner kick with 23:29 left in the first half to make it 1-0.
- Junior Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic, Station, N.J.) had a good chance for the Seawolves with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half, slicing in between three defenders and putting a shot on goal. Northeastern goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch made the save, though, and the Huskies held on to the 1-0 lead.
- Just moments after Johnstonbaugh's chance, Anna Slang (Cowichan Bay, Canada) dove in front of a loose ball near the Seawolves' net to prevent the Huskies from making it a two-goal contest.
- Johnstonbaugh had another good chance with just under 23 minutes left in the second half, firing through a pair of Northeastern defenders. The ball sunk just low enough for Nidetch to get a hand on it, preserving the advantage for Northeastern.
