STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's soccer tallied three first-half goals on Sunday afternoon, topping Iona, 3-0, in its 2017 home opener at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves move to 1-1-0 in 2017 with the victory, while Iona falls to 0-2-0.
Freshman
Rachel Florenz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored twice for the Seawolves – the first two goals of her collegiate career.
Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic, Station, N.J.) chipped in with a goal of her own, finding the back of the net on a penalty kick.
Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"I'm really happy with our overall performance. To come out and score a goal early... and then score again pretty quickly, it was great to get on the board and to play with a lead. Then I thought our performance in the second half was much better. Our spacing was better, we kept the ball better, we limited their chances. Overall, I'm really happy for our players to get a win today and go to 1-1 on the season."
Final: Stony Brook 3, Iona 0
- Stony Brook outshot Iona 33-7 in the win. The Seawolves' three first-half goals are the most the program has scored in an opening half since the 2010 season.
- Florenz scored the game's first goal just 1:35 into action, heading in a corner kick from Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) to make it 1-0 Seawolves. Florenz scored again less than four minutes later, driving a pass from Jordyn Klapper (Wantagh, N.Y.) into the back of the net for her second career goal.
- Johnstonbaugh's goal came at 43:39. After being fouled by an Iona defender inside the box, the junior blasted a free kick into the left side of the net for Stony Brook's third and final tally of the contest.
- Senior goalkeeper Shannon Robinson (Stony Point, N.Y.) made five saves in total, earning her first career shutout in the win.
