AMHERST, Mass. – Stony Brook women's soccer won its second straight non-conference game on Friday afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field, topping UMass, 2-0, to improve to 2-1-0 (0-0-0 AE) so far in 2017.
Rachel Florenz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and
Chelsie DePonte (Honolulu, Hawaii) both scored in the first half for the Seawolves. Stony Brook has now won two of its first three games to open up the season for the first time since 2013.
Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"I think we started the game brightly and Rae and Chelsie took advantage of their scoring opportunities. UMass put us under a lot of pressure in the second half, but our back four and Sofia did their job. It's great to get our first road win, and tomorrow morning our attention will turn to Dartmouth."
Final: Stony Brook 2, UMass 0
- Florenz opened the scoring for the Seawolves, collecting a turnover from the top of the box and blasting it into the back of the net to make it 1-0 just seven minutes into action. The goal is the freshman's third in the first three games of her collegiate career.
- DePonte added the insurance tally in the 19th minute, tapping in a loose ball from 10 yards out to make it 2-0. The goal is DePonte's first collegiate score.
- Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) recorded her first career shutout in the win, making four total saves.
- Stony Brook tallied 11 total shots, and has now recorded at least 10 shots in each of its last two contests.
