STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook men's soccer tallied two first half goals on Friday night at LaValle Stadium, topping Canisius, 2-0, in its 2017 season opener.
Senior
Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) and graduate student
Robin Bjornholm-Jatta (Trondheim, Norway) both scored for the Seawolves, while redshirt senior goalkeeper
Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) registered a shutout in the win.
Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"First, I've got to give a lot of credit to the crowd. It was a large crowd, and also loud – and they provided great energy. I think our guys fed off that [energy], and we were able to get two early goals. Once we had those two goals I felt like we really dominated play, we had a lot of the possession… Overall, I'm very happy with the performance. I felt like from start to finish the guys were very sharp."
Final: Stony Brook 2, Canisius 0
- Erdei opened up the scoring for the Seawolves just seven minutes into action. Eric McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) deflected the ball over to Erdei, who blasted one into the back of the net for Stony Brook's first tally of the new year. The goal is the senior's 15th career score over four years with the Seawolves.
- Bjornholm-Jatta got in on the scoring action just over seven minutes later, heading in a goal of his own off a Canisius deflection.
- McMahon made two saves, earning his 12th career shutout – which ranks tied for No. 3 in program history with Corey DeRosa (1992-94).
- The Seawolves tallied 23 total shots (11 on goal). The last time the program recorded more than 20 shots on goal came on Sept. 24, 2016 vs. Sacred Heart.
