Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Goals from Erdei, McKenna power Stony Brook past NJIT for fourth win of 2017

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  –  Senior Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) and graduate student Eric McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) both tallied a goal on Wednesday night, as Stony Brook men's soccer handed NJIT its first loss of the 2017 season, 2-1, at LaValle Stadium.

With the win, the Seawolves improve to 4-1-1 (0-0-0) to begin the year.

Quoting Head Coach Ryan Anatol
"I'm really happy with the game and the performance. When you look at the game, I thought it was probably one of our best games of the season, so far. I thought we were very good on both sides of the ball. Defensively, we were very organized… we put them under pressure. And then I thought we were really good in the attack. When you look at some of the chances we created, they were some of the best chances we've generated all season… I'm really happy with the win, a 2-1 result against a quality opponent is a good night for us.

Final: Stony Brook 2, NJIT 1
  • Stony Brook outshot NJIT 22-11 in total, which is the program's second-highest shot total of the 2017 season. The Seawolves outshot NJIT 10-1 in the first half. Stony Brook has outshot its opponent in four of six games this season.
  • Erdei's goal came at 58:50. Robin Bjornholm-Jatta (Trondheim, Norway) was fouled inside the box, then Erdei buried the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season. The senior forward now has 18 goals in his career at Stony Brook, needing just one more score to crack the program's Top 10 list in career goals.
  • McKenna found the back of the net at 75:44, heading in a throw from Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) to give the Seawolves a two-goal cushion.
  • Senior goalkeeper Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas) made six saves in the victory, including a series of stops in the final moments of the game to preserve the lead.
  • The Seawolves are now 4-1-1 in non-conference play to begin the season, which is the best start the program has had in its first six contests of a year since 2004 – when Stony Brook went 5-1-0.
