STATEN ISLAND, N.Y – Behind an offensive outburst from its freshman class, Stony Brook women's soccer earned its third victory of the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon at
Hameline Field, topping Wagner, 6-0. With the win, the
Seawolves move to 3-6-0 (0-0-0 AEC) this season.
All six of the program's goals in the victory came from freshmen.
Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick in the win – the first three goals of her collegiate career.
Rachel Florenz (East Islip, N.Y.) scored twice in the second half, and
Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.) chipped in with a goal of her own.
Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"It's been a long few weeks with some of the results not going our way, but even in defeat, we were growing as individuals and as a team. I'm happy for our players, not just for today's result, but more importantly with how they played. We played with a lot of composure on the ball, and were rewarded with some great goals by our attacking players. We can enjoy this win for the next 24 hours and then our attention will turn to Sacred Heart."
Final: Stony Brook 6, Wagner 0.
- Chavkin got Stony Brook on the board first, blasting the ball into the top right corner of the net from 16 yards out at 35:53, making it 1-0 Seawolves. Chavkin's goal – her first career score – was assisted by senior Sydney Vaughn (Ballwin, Mo.).
- Francese then netted three goals within 15 minutes of each other in the second half. Her first goal came at 52:31, heading the ball into the bottom of the net off a corner kick to make it 2-0 Seawolves. The freshman made it 3-0 at 55:14, blasting a shot into the bottom right corner after making a run down the left wing. Her third score came at 67:04, finding the back of the net from close range to complete the hat trick.
- Florenz then scored in the 71st and 75th minute – her fourth and fifth goals of the year. Her first goal came assisted by Chavkin, as she found the back of the net from the right wing. She then tapped in an unassisted score to make it 6-0 Stony Brook.
- Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) made two saves over more than 76 minutes, then Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) came in and made two stops over the final 13:52. The two goalkeepers combined to earn Stony Brook's second shutout of the season.
- Stony Brook tallied 22 shots in total, and attempted eight corner kicks. The Seawolves have now recorded more than 10 shots in four games this year.
- Samantha Goodwin (Westbury, N.Y.) and Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) both recorded an assist in the win, as well.
