Stony Brook downs UMass Lowell at LaValle Stadium for first conference win of 2017

STONY BROOK, N.Y – Stony Brook women's soccer earned its first conference win of the 2017 season on Thursday night at LaValle Stadium, topping UMass Lowell 3-0. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-7-0 (1-1-0 AEC) in 2017.

Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden), Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) all scored in the win for Stony Brook.

Quoting Head Coach Brendan Faherty
"I was really happy with how we started the game, I thought our assistants did a really good job with the scouting report… I thought we did a really good job of pressing them, turning the ball over in dangerous areas of the field, and we able to capitalize on that pressure. So I was really happy with the performance for all 90 minutes.

Final: Stony Brook 3, UMass Lowell 0
  • Gotesson got the scoring started for the Seawolves, recording the first goal of her collegiate career just 14:04 into action to make it 1-0 Stony Brook. Gotesson made a run down the left side of the field, then ripped a shot into the lower-right portion of the net with an assist from Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.).
  • Francese made it 2-0 just 3:10 later, finding the back of the net on a deflection from a Samantha Goodwin (Westbury, N.Y.) shot. The goal is Francese's fifth in her last four contests.
  • Johnstonbaugh added the third and final goal for Stony Brook. Francese played the ball perfectly over to Johnstonbaugh, who put the finishing touches on it for her third tally of the season. Chase Rome (Mulino, Ore.) also tallied an assist on the play.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) made two saves in the victory, tallying her second career shutout.
  • Stony Brook outshot UMass Lowell 19-10 in the victory. The Seawolves have recorded more shots than their opponent in five of their last seven games.
