Third-quarter run powers Seawolves past Vermont in conference action

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball picked up its first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, topping Vermont by the final score of 80-57. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 9-8 (1-3 AE) so far in 2017-18.

Stony Brook made a season-high 31 shots from the floor, shooting 31-of-57 (54.4 percent) in total. The Seawolves also shot a season-best 12-of-19 from 3-point distance.

"I was really proud of our effort today, especially coming out after halftime and having a strong third quarter. Executing our game plan on defense was a total team effort, and we did just that. Our guards caught fire from the field, which was exciting to see. Our home crowd created a great atmosphere once again today, and their continued support helped us earn a big conference victory."

Highlights
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) led the way once again, recording 24 points, a season-high nine assists and four rebounds. Johnson shot 9-of-13 from the field, knocking down 6-of-8 3-point attempts.
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) added 20 points and three rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting. The junior has tallied double-digit point totals in 12 games so far in 2017-18.
  • India Pagan (New London, Conn.) scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, the third-highest point total of her career.
  • Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J.) recorded six points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Clark has now grabbed double-digit rebounds in five contests this year.
Notes
  • After trailing 35-34 at halftime, the Seawolves opened up the third quarter on a 24-5 run over the first 6:24 of the second half.
  • Stony Brook outscored Vermont 33-13 in the third quarter, going an impressive 11-of-15 from the floor while shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from distance. Johnson had 13 of her 24 points in the third period of action.
  • Stony Brook outrebounded Vermont 34-32, and forced the Catamounts to turn the ball over three more times (17-14).
