Big second half run propels Stony Brook past Binghamton

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team used a 23-3 second half run to propel itself to a 77-66 win over Binghamton at Island Federal Credit Union Arena Thursday night. The Seawolves move to 8-11 on the year, 3-2 in the America East, while Binghamton sits at 10-10 overall, 1-4 in league play.

Boals' Reaction
"I think this was a much-need win for us tonight," said head coach Jeff Boals. "I was really happy with our response coming off two road losses. We had great leads in both of those games, but we had a couple lulls and you can't do that when you play really good teams on the road. But I'm really happy with how they responded."

Highlights
  • The Seawolves were able to take a lead into the halftime break thanks to 10 straight points from redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England). Yeboah got going late in the first half and senior UC Iroegbu (Sacramento, Calif.) helped get Stony Brook over the hump with four late free throws.
  • Binghamton quickly regained the lead to start the second half, going up by as many as seven.
  • Freshman Anthony Ochefu (West Chester, Pa.) laid one in to start off the big run for the Seawolves and junior Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) kept things going after Binghamton countered. Stony Brook made it a 23-3 scoring spree over a nearly nine-minute span.
  • The Bearcats finally broke things up, hitting a pair of free throws with 4:22 on the clock to cut into Stony Brook's 13-point lead.
  • The Seawolves never let the difference get back to single digits, closing the game out for the win.

Notes
  • Yeboah finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds, surpassing the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season and notching his second double-double of the year.
  • Cornish scored in double figures for the eighth time this year, scoring all 15 points in the second half.
  • The victory marks the 17th win for the Seawolves over Binghamton in the last 18 meetings.
  • Stony Brook's bench out-scored the opponent's for the 13th time this season, 29-20.
